Date a Girl Who Travels

Date a girl who travels. She’s the girl who has bookmarked tabs of her dream destinations. She’s the girl who constantly takes mental notes of the places she’s going to and the things she’s going to do. She finds calm in the familiar feeling of long car rides, the curiosity of busy train stations, and both the rush and drag of being jetlagged. She’s the girl who’s saving up for her next trip to somewhere.

Date a girl who travels because she’s an artist. She takes pictures of her adventures and discoveries more than anything else. She’s your little photographer on the go. Her camera roll and Instagram feed have more pictures of greeneries, good meals, and sunsets, than selfies and ootd’s. Safe to say, she’s a bit camera shy. She doodles wildflowers and roughly sketches architectural marvels on paper napkins and placemats over lunch. A girl who travels sees the world as her canvas and it’s one big museum. There’s so much to see, to admire, to understand, and there’s also so much she wants to leave her marks in. She seeks to inspire and be inspired.

Date a girl who travels because she’s a writer. She probably owns a personal journal where she keeps her little photographs, plane tickets, and other memorabilia. She also takes down quotes that motivate her. She’s written, “oh the places you’ll go” over and over, along with her true nature, “wanderer” in between the pages of her journal. She’s a reader. She always carries around a book to get lost in, between the coffee shops she frequents and her next destinations, between her now and her somewhere else. A girl who travels knows the world is a library, and she’s been writing her own story.

Date a girl who travels because she collects. She collects colorful fridge magnets, snow globes, and t-shirts. She might even send you a post card; apart from the ones she’ll keep in her little box of memories. She’s a bit sentimental so you know she values the little things.

Take her to creative spaces and quiet places like coffee shops and interactive museums. Help her cross things off her bucket list. Be a part of her history as she has a fascination for things left behind by time, like thrift shops and antique bargains at art deco districts with melting pots of treasure. Make her day by taking her to an amusement park. Go bicycling. Try painting. Conquer grueling hikes atop cliffs or accompany her on early morning strolls right before breakfast. She’d like that because the traveler goes anywhere, from across the world where no one speaks any English to the neighborhood park at any time of night.

Tell her of all your adventures and dreams and she’ll be more than happy to listen. Tell her “I know a great place,” she’ll just swap her usual sneakers for her trusty pair of sandals and then she’ll be up and ready to go. She has a default backpack or bag of essentials for any and every trip because she knows everyday is a potential for a new adventure big or small.

A girl who travels will never stay in one place. She’ll never step on you or anyone else. She doesn’t have time for that. She’d hate to be dead weight or be dragged down by it because she knows there are more things out there to explore. She also knows the wonders of packing light. She’s kind of a Miss Independent. Maybe you’ll just have to encourage her to keep trying and be there for her on the days she gets a little weary. Who knows, maybe she’ll find a little home in you. And maybe she’ll make you want to go places too. Sure enough however, she will make memories with you and cherish them because you’ve made it to her story.

But understand that the girl who travels is always on the go because she knows she has the world at her feet. So before you embark on the adventure of a lifetime that is dating the girl who travels, ask yourself first, if you think you can go the distance with her?

[…] Shameless plug but this really has been one of the funnest things I’ve written. About the traveling-type, inspired by some people’s stories and my own daydreams. Featuring a photo by Christie Lim, for a collaboration with local shoe brand Suelas. Check it out at LeRêveur by Abbey Sy. […]

Oh, if frequent travel for a third-world Juan wasn’t so pricey!

Nonetheless, it is nice to dream, and sweeter to strive!
